Here's what Mom got.

Mom was taking notes, so she'll be right when we differ.

What I learned from Catherine Smith
11/12/11
The Great Aunts, Julia and Adalide Riddle were born in ……….Kansas.
Father was John Henry Riddle, Mother Elizabeth Galey
Siblings of Julia and Adalide were David, George, Sussanah, (Suda)
and Bloomfield.
How the family went to W.T.
They were active Methodists. They were at a meeting, singing. George
was playing the harmonica, badly. One girl gave someone a nickel to
give to George if he would stop playing. George was mad, a fight
broke out with David and George and another kid. A knife was
involved. And a kid was killed! David was convicted, but the whole
town knew that David was a nice kid, the kid who died was a bully.
David went to jail. He was there 3 years, and then his family got a
judge to let him out. The whole family immediately went to Waitsburg,
W.T. on the Oregon Trail!!! The father, J
That is how Cora came to be born in W.T. Her mother was Suda. Suda
contracted typhoid and died. Cora had 2 siblings Myrtle & Elmer
(?). Myrtle was a nurse. She died at a young age of stomach cancer.
We have pictures of her with fantastic hats.
The family moved to Chicago (?).
David Riddle became a doctor.
George became a policeman (we have a picture of him in uniform).
Cora was married 3 times. Arthur Colvin was Cora’s second husband.
They had mother and Alfred. She then married Mr. Bigelow, and had
Aunt Betty.
Cora was a nurse. Arthur was married 5 times.
The ‘Great Aunts’ went to medical school in Chicago. They had one of
the first cars in their town. Picture we have is of a parade in
which the car is decorated with flowers with probably them driving.
Arthur Colvin, mothers father, was married 5 times. We may have
relatives we do not know about.
However, Cora’s children are the only ones in the Riddle line. None
of the other siblings of The Great Aunts had children. And mother is
the only one of her siblings to have children.
There are letters about the cruelty of the Great Aunts.
The reason mother knew Lydia and Ed Kreck was they took her in and
defended her when she was suing to leave the Great Aunts.

Was the Riddle patriarch Robert or John Henry? I wonder if we're related to Nelson Riddle. 8 states mentioned by the two accounts here- IN, KS, W.T., IA, OK, IL, WI, & CA. What year was the Oregon Trail trip- could it have been motivated in part by the Civil War?

I thought it was Robert, and Mom thought it was John Henry. Catherine is sending a genealogy, so then we can fill in dates and names. She also mentioned the civil war as a reason to leave, but seemed to feel that the move was mostly to get the boys out of town.

Remember those pictures of sodiers that we figured must be from the Spanish-American War? Those must be Bloomfield Riddle's.

Also, if Bloomfield was born in 1874 in KS, when did the Oregon Trail trip happen? Were they opposed to taking the train out west for some reason?

I was wondering that, too. The trail was still in use, though less, until about 1890. Catherine had actual census data, with "on wagon train" or something in the corner. So, maybe the census of 1880? Also, the military pics are clearly labelled Elmer. Apparently Elmer went from Juvi hall to the army to actual criminal behavior. I wonder if we can find pictures of Bloomfield through the OshKosh paper, though.

Okay, it was Robert Henry Riddle. (I've reached the Mormons!)

Did they spell the name Cantonwine?

There doesn't seem to be anyone actually named Cantowyne, so maybe that is Elmer. Catherine was surprised that we thought Grandma never went to OK because of that census data. That was soon before she died. Have you found a death cert for her?

Sara said...

I'll look. Meantime, found a 1930 census from LA, with 5 Riddles cohabiting: the GAs, George, Lenore & Aunt Betty.

Apparently, all Cantonwines are descended from a prussian, Charles Kuntenwine, who immigrated in the early 1800s.
I found an Elmer Cantonwine born in 1889, but his Mother's name is wrong. Anybody know Suda's husband 1st name?

William Cantonwine, born 1826ish, (which makes him 15 yrs older than Suda) maybe in Iowa.

Sara said...

Sorry, Wm born 1846

I'm fairly confident about this one:
Suda married William Cantonwine, b. 1846 in Iowa, son of Charles (b.1818, Bedford PA) & Julia (b.1824). Charles is son of Charles (b. 1776, Prussia) & Mary Magdelena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob Scholl.
This is way more fun than reading Descartes.

Where are you seeing that, Chan?

I'm cheating- I signed up for Ancestry.com. It has beautifully indexed censuses, with enlargements of the docs.
I've been looking at Russell, and I think it's worth a new post.

Who was Cora third husband? Did she have any children with him?

Aunt Betty's father was Mr. Bigelow. Do not know who the first husband was.
