Watkin's Glen
The new landscape architects with trowels
We had a nice day in the finger lakes yesterday. We went to Rachel's graduation party near Dundee. It was at a nursery; food, weather and company were all excellent. It was catered by my friend Ann's sister. Before the party we went for a walk in Watkins Glen. We took a shuttle to the top and walked down. I kept wondering how many of the people walking up were unaware of the shuttle.

Chick update
This morning one chick flew to edge of the container. We have moved them from the dining room to the laundry room. It will be boring for them. Buster was the culprit that caused the flight. He has not found them boring as yet. (unlike you, ourblog dear readers).
The top 2 chicks are 3 weeks old, (Leslie, a New Hampshire Red and Cuck or George, a Cuckoo Maren) The bottom 2 are 2 weeks old (The left one looked like a chipmonk at 3 days , anyway it is an Americana named either Ted or Alvin, the other a Buff Orpenton named Goldie) The chick handler is Susi.

More Pictures
These are of the Bellairs Institute. We had lectures in the picnic area below. My room is on the left in the picture above. The big trees are mahogany, and the flowering ones are mango.
The church next door was built in 1680 of local stone.
This is the beach where we mostly swam. On the last day I saw a smaller sting ray here, too.

More Snorkeling
Today and yesterday I just swam around the reef behind the institute. I saw a lot of cool fish, angel fish, big purple-green coral fish, just lots of different kinds of fish. I saw two kinds of eel--a fat yellow one with tiny black spots and a long grey one with white spots. I saw a clown fish and a sting ray. The ray was a bit too impressive--it was certainly 2 feet across and its stinger at least 3 feet long. I left the area. I was accompanied by a friendly white fish. I followed him for a while, then when I quit he followed me. This went on for at least half an hour. I started testing him and swimming away, and he came after me. Very charming. Maybe I'll have vegetables for dinner.
My "networking" seems to have paid off hugely, as I got a suggestion that seems to have fixed the famous glitch. But you never know, of course... In general, the math was excellent, but there was a drawback--we are on the west coast, and I didn't see a single sunset, as we had dinner and evening lecture at that time. Maybe tomorrow.
I am tempted to go to church on Sunday. It's next door, built in 1680, and they have organ pipes pointing straight out over the audience. And they have a "Sung Eucharist" at 9 a.m.

Muggy
By now I'm finding the guest house totally pleasant. We are given interesting things to eat. Today we had corn fritters for breakfast and flying fish and breadfruit for dinner. We had a group outing to the Atlantic side of the island. There's dangerous surf, but lots of beach glass. We also went to a forest gully, which was beautiful. A lot of old trees and millipedes. I think my pictures there will come out.
I'm actually learning a lot of math, and after snorkeling and millipede-watching with the person whose paper I've been studying for a year, I finally got up courage to ask him about it on the bus. So that's what we call networking, which is what conferences are for, right?
I miss everyone, though.

Cooler
Today was kind of breezy. The Math this morning was followable, but I spent the afternoon prepping for tomorrow, and it doesn't look good. Then I went swimming. Cris and I bought goggles this morning so we could open our eyes underwater. We also bought chocolate covered digestives. This is a British-oriented place. We went to the grocery store, too, but the mangos looked pretty bad. There's a fruit stand on the street, though, which I'll try tomorrow. The lady behind me in line kept telling the cashier that the bananas she was buying had better be no more than 40 cents, because that's all she had. So the cashier was very amused by this, but not so much amused by my inability to read their coins, but then I waited, and this woman handed the cashier all her money--98 cents, and the bananas came to $1.41. So I handed the customer 50 cents, but she gestured with her head at the cashier, so I gave it to her, which the cashier thought was even funnier. It's a very cheerful culture.

Very Warm
Barbados is very warm. We are staying in a guest house situation that reminds me so much of Indian Express, except it's very small and not at all grand. If you tread gingerly over a lot of rocky ugliness and then past a swanky resort, you can swim in the Caribbean. Which is very, very pretty, but tepid. There is ample public access, and as it was Sunday we were swimming with a lot of locals. That is, We were swimming. At one point I noticed they were all watching their rubber ball head out to sea. There was a party of at least 15, kids, adults, youth, and no one could swim! I retrieved the ball.
I am collecting coral. The flowering trees are very beautiful. It's mango season.
I am sweating a lot. I'd enjoy a better fan.
The Math begins tomorrow.
